These experiences are gained from a vast number of referrals from the medical and surgical services. Brigham and Women’s Hospital, being a tertiary care hospital, treats patients with a wide variety of complex medical needs that are often affected by oral health. Residents also participate as members of the multi-disciplinary team in the Head and Neck Cancer Clinic of the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. Under direct supervision of an attending dentist, residents manage dental rehabilitation cases in the operating room from start to finish. Residents obtain medical histories, perform risk assessments and dental evaluations, provide dental care in the operating room, and write all orders, progress notes, post-op notes, and discharge summaries.
