GENERAL PRACTICE RESIDENCY IN DENTISTRY
Rotations - Massachusetts General Hospital
The Massachusetts General Hospital is the third oldest general hospital in the nation. It is an 898-bed Harvard-affiliated hospital. The Massachusetts General Hospital is consistently ranked as one of the top 10 hospitals in the country by US News and World Report. It serves as a primary and secondary care hospital to the metropolitan Boston area and a tertiary care hospital to patients from around the world. The hospital has training programs in all of the medical and surgical specialties and subspecialties, including a dual degree DMD/MD program in oral and maxillofacial surgery.
The dental resident rotates through the MGH Dental Group, which is housed in a 10-chair facility. The MGH Dental Group is run as a hospital-owned private practice, which services mostly adult patients. Specialists are available in endodontics, periodontics, prosthodontics, pedodontics, orthodontics, facial pain, and oral and maxillofacial surgery. In the course of a day, dental residents spend two thirds of their time seeing regularly scheduled outpatients for comprehensive dental care and the remaining one third of their time seeing inpatients on consultation. These consultations may be requested by a wide variety of hospital services such as cardiac surgery, hematology/oncology, and neurology.
Residents will:
- Gain experience in comprehensive dental treatment planning.
- Use four-handed dentistry to provide a wide range of dental care, including implants, root canal therapy, periodontal surgery, restorative dentistry, and prosthodontic care.
- Learn management of daily operations of a dental practice and the financial management aspect of patient care.
- Gain experience in the dental management of medically-compromised outpatients and inpatients.
