The General Residency Program has been developed in
Cambridge
,
Somerville
and
Everett
which is sponsored by the Cambridge Health Alliance, affiliated with Harvard School of Dental Medicine and accredited by the American Dental Association. Hospital-based experience is provided in ambulatory, emergency and inpatient dental care settings for six general practice residents during this 53 week program which commenced in 2005. The educational components of the program include 70% clinical dental services, 25% hospital rotations/activities and 5% didactic courses. Hospital rotations and activities occur principally at The Cambridge Hospital and the main clinical dental sites are the

and the Harvard School of Dental Medicine.
Cambridge Health Alliance (CHA) is a nationally recognized, award-winning health care system that serves the residents of
Cambridge
, Somerville Everett and other communities in
Boston
’s Metro-North region. It is comprised of The Cambridge Hospital,
Somerville
Hospital
,
Whidden
Memorial
Hospital
, the Cambridge Public Health Department and over 20 primary care sites. The

is a unique model that integrates public health, preventive, primary and specialty clinical care, education and research.
Windsor
Street
Community
Health
Center
is one of the CHA primary care sites and is located in a newer, multi-purpose community center at
119 Windsor Street
in
Cambridge
. Health care services which are provided include adult and pediatric primary care medicine as well as dentistry.
Windsor Street
serves as the primary site for provision of outpatient dental care at CHA and a full range of comprehensive dental and emergency services are provided with over 17,000 patient visits per year.
The clinical site of the GPR program at Harvard School of Dental Medicine is the Harvard Dental Center (HDC) on the first floor at
188 Longwood Avenue
in
Boston
. This facility is also utilized by the postdoctoral programs in endodontics and periodontics and the residents practice side by side with world renowned Harvard faculty. The HDC is a modern facility with 24 dental operatories, a radiology facility, laboratory, sterilization area, reception area and business office.
Overall Goals and Objectives of the Program
1.
Provide training to prepare general dentists for a satisfying and stable career in community dentistry.
2.
Provide a high level of comprehensive dental services to patients seeking care.
3.
Enhance the residents’ knowledge in all phases of general dentistry.
4.
Provide training in the care of racially and culturally diverse population groups.
5.
Train residents to provide dental care in a hospital setting.
Admissions Information
Enrolled applicants must hold a degree from a dental school accredited by the ADA Commission on Dental Accreditation (
United States
,
Puerto Rico
or
Canada
).
US
citizenship is not required, however GP residents must legally be entitled to study in the
United States
. A stipend in excess of $44,000 will be provided plus benefits including health insurance and malpractice coverage. There is no tuition charge.
