The oral medicine seminars include a literature review, as well as, focused discussions and review of classic and current papers on specific oral medicine topics. These include oral mucosal disease, pain syndromes, burning mouth syndrome, use of pharmacological agents, oral manifestations of systemic diseases and the conduct of clinical research, to name a few. Guests speakers from various medical specialties present lectures that update specific topics.

Site: Division of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Medicine and Dentistry at Brigham and Women's Hospital

Students rotate through the oral medicine practice located at the Division of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Medicine and
Dentistry at the Brigham and Women's Hospital. Cases seen range from patients who are
obtaining an evaluation prior to cytoreductive therapy, patients with mucosal diseases, such
as lichen planus and leukoplakia, burning mouth syndrome, oral manifestations of systemic disease and chronic graft vs. host disease. Students will be required
to obtain a history, perform a head and neck examination and present the findings,
differential diagnosis and treatment plan. All records are electronic and students learn to prepare consultation reports.
Inpatient Care Clerkship: - back to top
Site: Division of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Medicine and Dentistry at the Brigham and Women's Hospital
Preceptors: Dr. Nathaniel Treister, Dr. Mark Lerman
Students will be engaged in a two month rotation in inpatient care during their second year
of postdoctoral training. During this rotation, the student is responsible for the oral examination and oral care of patients in the hematopoietic stem cell transplantation unit and for all other
inpatients for whom a dental consultation has been requested. Students will document their
findings in progress notes within the medical records of the patient. They will get a good
opportunity to interact with the medical staff and to examine and treat patients who are
severely immunocompromised.
Dermatology I Clerkship: - back to top
Site: Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Brigham and Women's Hospital
Preceptors: Attending Dermatologist
Students will see patients with either an attending or senior resident or fellow and will learn
to perform a skin examination on patients. They will also learn correct terminology for a variety of skin conditions and present their findings, differential diagnoses and treatment
plan to the attending dermatologist. Students will have the opportunity to assist with and
perform skin punch biopsies, cryotherapy and intralesional injections.
Otorhinolaryngology/Head and Neck Tumor Board Clerkship: - back to top
Site: Joint Center for Otolaryngology, 333 Longwood Avenue, Third Floor
Preceptor: Attending Dentist
Students will see patients referred to the Joint Center of Otolaryngology for a variety of head and neck diseases. They will examine patients and present findings and treatment plans to the attending. They will observe the use of direct flexible laryngoscopy and will work in both an inpatient and outpatient setting and will assist during surgical procedures performed in the operating room. Students will also participate in the Head and Neck Oncology Clinic.

Site: Department of Radiology, Mass Eye and Ear Infirmary, Dana Farber Cancer Institute, Harvard School of Dental Medicine
Preceptor: Dr. Hugh Curtin, Dr. Bernard Friedland
Principles of Oral Radiology:
Students will study oral radiology with Dr. Bernard Friedland in an intensive seminar setting. They will learn the
principles of panoramic and intraoral radiography, tomography, digital imaging and the
principles of CT scanning and MRI scanning. They will also learn the principles of interpretive
radiology.
Head and Neck Radiology:
Students will work with Dr. Hugh Curtin in the evaluation and diagnosis of imaging studies
performed on patients at the Mass Eye and Ear Infirmary. They will learn the principles for the evaluation of CT scans, MRI's and newer imaging technologies such as PET scans as well as nuclear
medicine studies.
They will also be encouraged to attend the one-week intensive radiology course run by Dr. Michael Pharaoh in Toronto, offered each Spring. Orofacial Pain and Pain Service Clerkship: - back to top

Orofacial Pain:
Students will evaluate and diagnose patients referred for a variety of orofacial pain
disorders, including temporomandibular joint dysfunction syndromes, atypical facial pain and
headache. They will also perform nerve blocks and other procedures to alleviate facial pain.
Hematology/Oncology
Site: Dana Farber Cancer Institute, Brigham and Women's Hospital
Preceptors: Attending Physician
A 2-4 week clinical clerkship in medical hematology/oncology is available to students at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. The objective of the rotation is to familiarize the participant with current conceptsof the diagnosis, biology and management of cancer in the hospital setting.
Infectious Disease Clerkship: -
Site: Division of Infectious Disease, Brigham and Women's Hospital
Preceptors: Attending Physician
Students will evaluate and diagnose patients with a variety of infectious complications on
an inpatient and outpatient basis. The outpatient facility sees mainly patients with HIVdisease. Students will learn the appropriate use of standard antibiotics as well as new agents.
