DEPARTMENT OF ORAL MEDICINE, INFECTION AND IMMUNITY
Division of Periodontology: |
| |
|
The goal of the program is to train individuals to be clinical scholars in the field of periodontology. To foster this, all residents are required to complete an advanced degree (MMSc or DMSc) in conjunction with the certificate. Graduates of the program are prepared to pursue careers in academics, research and clinical practice. The clinical component of the training is closely coupled with training in another discipline such as biomedical research or health care delivery and research. In the clinical component of the program, the student is expected to become proficient in the diagnosis and treatment of all forms of periodontal disease including the management of advanced cases, which require interaction with other clinical disciplines.

In addition, the student is expected to develop a firm foundation in oral medicine and an understanding of the management of patients presenting with systemic disorders. The scope of skills and knowledge in which the student is expected to become proficient in ranges from the principles of preventive dentistry to the use of advanced surgical procedures including the indications, contraindications and limitations. The student is also expected to understand their indications, treatment planning and placement of dental implants and site development. Finally, the training of each student is specifically tailored to assure that (s)he becomes competent in selected biomedical research or public health oriented areas related to periodontology.
