Advanced Graduate Endodontics - Back to Top

Robert R. White, DMD, Director of Advanced Graduate Endodontics

For program information, please contact:
Alicia Belair, Administrator, Advanced Graduate Endodontics

Overview
The Advanced Graduate Program in Endodontics is a three year program leading to an MMSc degree in Oral Biology and a Certificate in Endodontics. A DMSc degree (4 years) is an option for those individuals whose aim is to enter academics or research.

The purpose of the program is to develop competent endodontists with an extensive background in the biological sciences, research methodology, and teaching. This broadly based education in endodontics and related phases of graduate education provides the student with a thorough preparation for careers in specialty clinical practice, research, and / or academics. The program is also designed to satisfy the guidelines for and encourage certification by the American Board of Endodontics.

Clinical Training
Clinical experience comprises approximately 40% of the program and is gained through the treatment of patients at the Harvard Dental Center at HSDM. Students work under the direct supervision of either full or part-time endodontic instructors. Expectations focus on quality and diversity of experience, which must include 200 to 225 non-surgical procedures, 20 to 30 surgical procedures, and at least 50 recalls.

Didactic Training
Didactic courses given by the department, HSDM, and affiliated institutions make up 30% of the program. Department seminars include: Interdepartmental Treatment Planning, Current and Classic Literature Reviews, and Intradepartmental Case Presentations.

Research Activities
All advanced graduate students engage in research as an integral part of their training at HSDM. Research activities are conducted with Harvard faculty mentors at HSDM or affiliated institutions such as Children’s Hospital, Massachusetts General Hospital or the Forsyth Institute.

Teaching Responsibilities
During the second and third years, each advanced graduate student gains teaching experience through clinical, lecture and laboratory teaching assignments in the predoctoral endodontic curriculum.

Admissions Information
The application deadline is October 1 for admission to the class beginning the following July. Application information and forms are available through the HSDM  Office of Admissions. (www.hsdm.harvard.edu/ASP-HTML/prospective-graduate.html)

Advanced Graduate Implantology - Back to Top

For program information, please contact:
Paula Anderson, Department Coordinator

Overview
The Advanced Graduate Program in Implantology is a two year program leading to a Certificate in Implant Dentistry. MMSc, DMSc or PhD opportunities will be individually considered upon request as they would require an additional time commitment beyond the two years of the Implant Certificate Program.

The objective of this program is to enable highly motivated individuals with proven scholarship and excellence in patient care to achieve academic leadership in the clinical and scientific fields of implant dentistry and tissue regeneration.

Please Note: Applicants must have a DMD, DDS, or equivalent diploma, as well as at least two years of advanced graduate education in a specialty of dental medicine or comparable professional experience.

Clinical Training
Clinical activities take place at the Faculty Group Practice of the Harvard Dental Center and affiliated institutions. Implant fellows are exposed to both surgical and restorative aspects of implant dentistry, with special attention to patient care under comprehensive treatment planning.

Didactic Training
Didactic components are delivered in a number of core modules throughout the two year program. Each module is presented under the concept of "evidence based dentistry". Related literature is discussed and consequently a lecture, workshop, or hands-on exercise is offered to materialize the previously discussed topic. Additional lectures from the AGE course catalogue are offered. Didactic courses will also includde training in digital dental photography and speaker development.

Research Activities
Basic and clinical research components in the field of Implant Dentistry are essential. Research activities are conducted under an assigned research mentor and by applying for funding from different grant sources. Monthly research update meetings between fellows and researchers, as well as other interested participants, will serve to monitor progress of each research project.

Results obtained from innovative and translational research will be presented by implant fellows at various scientific meetings. Candidates are required to prepare at least one manuscript publishable in a peer reviewed journal (prior to graduation) for completion of the Certificate

Teaching Responsibilities
Fellows are expected to supervise "implant related treatments" by participating as instructors in both predoctoral and postdoctoral curriculum in the Student Teaching Practice of the Harvard Dental Center.

Admissions Information
The application deadline is February 1, 2008 for admission to the class beginning the following July. In subsequent years the deadline will change. Application information and forms are available through the HSDM  Office of Admissions. (www.hsdm.harvard.edu/ASP-HTML/prospective-graduate.html)

IMPORTANT: Applicants must have a DMD, DDS, or equivalent diploma, as well as at least two years of advanced graduate education in a specialty of dental medicine or comparable professional experience.
