Biography / Clinical / Academic / Research interests

Dr. Kaumudi Joshipura, BDS, MS, ScD, is a Professor of Epidemiology and Director of the Division of Dental Public Health at University of Puerto Rico School of Dentistry, and is an Adjunct Faculty at Harvard School of Public Health and Harvard School of Dental Medicine. She is a dentist, with a Master's degree in Biostatistics, a doctorate in Epidemiology and is a diplomat of the American Board of Dental Public Health.

Her research includes oral epidemiology, nutrition, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and pregnancy outcomes. She has published in major medical journals including JAMA and NEJM on topics related to nutrition and cardiovascular disease. Her publications include book chapters and over 50 original articles. She was among the first to show prospectively that tooth loss and/or periodontal disease were risk factors for coronary heart disease, ischemic stroke and peripheral artery disease.  She was also among the first to show the detrimental effect of tooth loss on specific foods and nutrients.  Dr. Joshipura is also actively involved with evaluating nutritional risk factors for oral conditions including periodontal disease and oral pre-cancer.

Her NIH grants have focused on assessing the impact of dental disease on systemic disease, and on evaluating dietary, inflammatory and other pathways for these associations. Dr. Joshipura has been the Principal Investigator of the NIH funded grant evaluating the association between periodontal disease, inflammatory biomarkers and CHD, and a co-investigator of a grant assessing the relationship between periodontal disease and adverse pregnancy outcomes. She is expecting another RO1 grant to assess the association between periodontal disease, inflammation and ischemic stroke and peripheral vascular disease.

Dr. Joshipura plays an active role in the NIH funded Harvard comprehensive T-32 training grant.  She also serves as an advisory committee member for another training grant at HSPM focusing on health disparities. She has helped several of her trainees in obtaining awards for their research NIH grants. Based on the success, she has been awarded an NIH grant for mentoring and research to increase the pool of clinicians in clinical research.

Dr. Joshipura has been invited to speak by several international and national organizations in various countries. She serves as a consultant for the Council on Scientific Affairs of the American Dental Association, and as a councilor of the Nutrition Group of the IADR. She also serves on a committee convened by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the American Association of Periodontology to develop and evaluate periodontal measures for national and regional periodontal surveillance. She has also served on NIH grant review committees and as an advisor to the World Health Organization.
