Nathaniel Simon Treister, DMD, DMSc

Instructor in Oral Medicine

Dr. Treister received his DMD from the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine and completed his oral medicine and oral biology postdoctoral training at Harvard School of Dental Medicine. He is a diplomate of the American Board of Oral Medicine. He is now an oral medicine attending and Director of Inpatient Services in the Division of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Oral Medicine and Dentistry at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, and is the site coordinator for the Brigham and Women’s Hospital/Harvard-Wide General Practice Residency. He also holds an appointment at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. .

Clinical / Academic / Research interests

Dr. Treister’s clinical interests include oral mucosal and salivary gland diseases, orofacial pain disorders, and oral manifestations of systemic diseases. He is especially interested in oral complications in cancer patients (in particular oral chronic graft-versus-host disease and bisphosphonate-associated osteonecrosis of the jaws) and works very closely with the Division of Hematologic Malignancies and the Stem Cell Transplantation Program at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. Dr. Treister gives lectures and seminars in oral medicine topics in a number of predoctoral and postdoctoral courses at HSDM and HMS, and teaches medical and dental students, fellows, and dental residents in the hospital clinic. His research interests include the pathophysiology and management of oral chronic graft-versus-host disease and other complications of cancer therapies including bisphosphonate-associated osteonecrosis of the jaws and oral mucositis.
