Harvard School of Dental Medicine Receives

American Dental Education Association (ADEA)

Award for Vision

The Harvard School of Dental Medicine (HSDM) won a preeminent Gies Award from the American Dental Education Association. The Award recognizes contributions to and support of global oral health and education initiatives. HSDM received the Outstanding Vision Award for an Academic Dental Institution.

The ADEA is the leading national organization for dental education. The Award is named after William J. Gies, who after visiting the existing dental schools in 1926, published the Gies Report, Dental Education in the United States and Canada. The Gies Report continues to constitute the most comprehensive survey of dental education. Selected by a distinguished panel of judges consisting of ADEAGies Foundation Board of Trustees, honorees were announced for vision, achievement and innovation as an academic dental institution, dental educator, and public/private partner.

Michael C. Alfano, DMD, PD ’74, Executive Vice President of New York University and former College of Dentistry dean, won the Outstanding Vision for a Dental Educator Award. He earned his post doctoral degree in periodontology from HSDM.

Seven other award recipients were announced including David Satcher of the National Center for Primary Care, The National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, Charles Goodacre, Marcia Boyd, and dental institutions from the universities of Iowa, Louisiana State and Maryland.
