Dentists are highly skilled in diagnosing and managing diseases of the teeth and periodontium, yet many feel less confident when faced with “non-dental” oral diseases. Physicians, likewise, receive little formal training in oral medicine and typically refer patients with oral conditions to dental specialists.
As a result, patients with oral medicine concerns often see multiple providers before receiving an accurate diagnosis and treatment plan, sometimes months or even years after symptoms first appear. Because dentists are responsible for comprehensive oral health care, they must be equipped to recognize and manage the wide range of non-odontogenic conditions affecting the oral cavity.
This lecture will present a clear, systematic approach to patient evaluation, diagnosis, and management of both common and serious oral medicine conditions.
