A day full of smiles
While winter's chill gripped Boston, the Harvard Dental Center was alive with energy as dental students, faculty, and staff hosted Harvard School of Dental Medicine’s (HSDM) Give Kids a Smile (GKAS) event. Nearly 50 young patients received dental care during this year’s event, held on February 22 during Children’s Dental Health Month.
“Seeing students from all years, residents from various specialties, and faculty from every corner of the dental school come together to share knowledge and connect with the community was one of the most incredible experiences of my time here,” said Roene Nasr, DMD28, who served as a lead coordinator of GKAS.
HSDM students served as dental providers, assistants, and oral health care education volunteers. Routine dental exams, cleanings, and x-rays were provided to children ages one to 17. HSDM faculty, Harvard Dental Center staff, and Advanced Graduate Education (AGE) residents were also on hand to oversee care.
Students led oral health education activities, teaching young patients proper brushing and flossing techniques. In addition to learning about positive oral health habits, a face painting station and goodie bags were also included in the festivities.
For some children, it was their very first time in a dental chair. Children from Natick Public Schools attended the event and received free dental care and education. "We are so grateful for Harvard Dental School and Give Kids a Smile. They have provided kind, compassionate, and thorough care to our students that wouldn't have been evaluated otherwise," said Natalia Dimitrova-Topaloff, a social worker for Natick Public Schools. "Some of our students who had never seen a dentist before now have a dental home. It is incredible to attend such a fun, educational, and inspiring program."
“The clinic was buzzing with energy, and between the education room, face painting, and the joy shared by the families, the day felt like so much more than just a dental appointment—it was a celebration of learning, caring, and community for all," Nasr said.
