Dental education staff members recognized as Harvard Heroes
Carrie Sylven and Adrien Doherty chosen for their work advocating for students
The Harvard Heroes Recognition Program celebrates the accomplishments of Harvard staff whose work supports the University’s mission at the highest levels of contribution, impact and excellence. This year, Carrie Sylven and Adrien Doherty have been honored as Harvard School of Dental Medicine’s (HSDM) 2025 Harvard Heroes, for their exceptional contributions and unwavering dedication to the School.
Since joining HSDM in 2015 as director of Student Affairs, Sylven has become a cornerstone of the student experience. A vital part of the Office of Dental Education (ODE), she is widely recognized as a passionate advocate for students, consistently ensuring their needs remain at the heart of the School’s mission.
“She is so hard working, professional, authentic and uplifting, and goes above and beyond to ensure students not only get the best training in dental medicine but receive it through warmth and empathy,” wrote her nominators. They also noted how Sylven plays a crucial role in shaping a supportive and inclusive academic environment.
“I’m deeply honored to be recognized as an HSDM Harvard Hero. Supporting students has always been the heart of my work, and I’m truly grateful to be part of a community that shares that commitment,” said Sylven. “Being an advocate for our students—amplifying their voices, helping them thrive, and ensuring they feel seen and supported—has been one of the most rewarding parts of my career.”
A valued member of the ODE team, Doherty brought his talents to HSDM in 2010 after beginning his Harvard career at the Divinity School. Through his dedication and hard work, he has advanced to his current position as academic societies coordinator, supporting students, faculty, and staff. Doherty celebrated a twenty-year Harvard service milestone this past year.
His nominators noted, “Whether supporting faculty, liaising with the patient care clinic, or ensuring that students have everything they need to succeed, Adrien approaches every task with unparalleled dedication, wisdom, and above all, heart.”
“I’ve had the privilege of being part of this outstanding community for a good number of years, and to be recognized in such a manner is truly a great honor that means more to me than I could express,” said Doherty.
Sylven and Doherty will be recognized, along with other staff heroes from across the University, at the Harvard Heroes Celebration held on Thursday, June 12th at 3:30 p.m. at Sanders Theatre. The ceremony will also be livestreamed.
