Kim-Chen Laboratory

What we do

The Kim/Chen Lab is focused on investigating the pathogenesis of oral diseases, including periodontitis, peri-implantitis, and taste dysfunction, while also evaluating innovative clinical interventions.

Research Focus

We utilize advanced techniques such as single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) and metagenomic analyses, and we conduct clinical trials on cutting-edge dental implants, smart toothbrushes, and advanced materials for bone augmentation. Additionally, we explore novel treatments like nonthermal gas plasma for enhancing the surface of titanium implants.

On-going projects

  • Single-cell RNA Sequencing of Periodontal/Peri-Implant Health and Disease
    • This project investigates the pathogenic mechanisms in periodontitis and peri-implantitis by analyzing the interrelationship between metagenomic 16S rRNA bacterial data and host scRNA-seq (single-cell RNA sequencing) data.
  • Nonthermal Gas Plasma Treatment for Titanium Surface Treatment
    • This in vitro study explores the use of nonthermal gas plasma to remove impurities, enhance hydrophilicity, and evaluate antibacterial effects on aged titanium implant surfaces.
  • Taste Dysfunction Associated with Periodontitis and COVID-19 in Humans
    • This project analyzes taste buds at single-cell resolution to uncover the cellular mechanisms of taste dysfunction in periodontitis patients and those with long-term COVID-19 symptoms.
  • Clinical Trials
    • Smart Toothbrush and Glycemic Control in Diabetic Patients
      • This clinical trial assesses the efficacy of the Sonicare Diamond Clean Smart® toothbrush in improving glycemic control and oral health in diabetic patients with periodontitis.
    • Advanced Materials for Bone Augmentation
      • This study compares the effectiveness of advanced materials for bone augmentation in maintaining alveolar ridge dimensions post-tooth extraction.
    • Clinical and Radiographic Evaluations of Hiossen EK III NH Dental Implants
This trial evaluates the performance of the Hiossen EK III NH implant system in terms of osseointegration and crestal bone level maintenance
