Dr. Roland Baron

Professor of Oral Medicine, Infection, and Immunity

Dr. Roland Baron received his DDS and PhD in oral biology from the University of Paris, where he became an associate professor and chief of the Physiology Section. He served as president of the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research (ASBMR) until October 2015.

In 1975, Baron joined Yale University School of Medicine, eventually becoming a tenured full professor. In 2008, he became chair of the Department of Oral Medicine, Infection, and Immunity (OMII) at Harvard School of Dental Medicine (HSDM) and a professor at Harvard Medical School (HMS) and Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH).

Baron is the founder and editor-in-chief of Bone, the journal of the International Bone and Mineral Society (IBMS). He held executive positions at Hoechst Marion Roussel, Aventis, and founded ProSkelia, serving as president and chief scientific officer until 2006.

He has published over 250 scientific papers on bone cell and molecular biology. His awards include the Thesis Prize (1972), MERIT Award (1993), and the Louis V. Avioli Founders Award (2002). He served on the ASBMR Council and the IBMS Board of Directors and was president of the European Calcified Tissue Society (ECTS) in 2007.

Baron's research in bone biology has led to therapies for bone loss in arthritis and osteoporosis. The Baron-Gori Laboratory focuses on signal transduction in skeletal development and remodeling.
