Dr. Tobias Fretwurst

Dr. Tobias Fretwurst is an associate professor and head of the Division of Regenerative Oral Medicine in the Department of Oral and Craniomaxillofacial Surgery at the University Medical Center Freiburg, Germany. He is also a part-time lecturer on oral medicine, infection, and immunity at the Harvard School of Dental Medicine and served as visiting professor from 2022 to 2023.

Fretwurst earned his dental degree from the University of Greifswald, Germany, and completed advanced training in oral surgery at the University Medical Center Freiburg, where he also became board certified. In 2019, he completed his postdoctoral qualification for independent teaching at the university level at the University of Freiburg Faculty of Medicine.

He completed international research training as an Osteology Research Scholar at the University of Michigan School of Dentistry in the Giannobile Lab. He has authored more than 50 peer-reviewed publications in oral surgery, biomaterials, and precision oral medicine.

Fretwurst has received numerous national and international research and teaching awards and has mentored multiple award-winning doctoral students. He serves as a board member of the German Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, president of the Upper Rhine Dental Society, and is involved in committees with the Osteology Foundation and the American Academy of Osseointegration. In addition to his academic and research roles, he remains active in clinical oral surgery and implant dentistry.
