Update: Standing with Our International Community
Dear Members of the HSDM Community,
Our University community has experienced a challenging 24 hours, addressing actions taken by the federal government by the revocation of Harvard’s certification under the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP). This action directly impacts the rights and opportunities of our international students and scholars under sponsored F and J visas, as described by President Garber earlier this morning.
As President Garber updated us this afternoon, we are encouraged that Harvard’s motion was granted by the court. This motion allows us to continue enrolling international students and scholars and we will await case proceedings, including outcomes of the next hearing date set for May 29th . This means that for now, the government’s revocation of our F-1 and J-1 programs is not in effect. This was an important step, and I am reassured by President Garber and his leadership council working around the clock to protect our valued international community members.
Questions and concerns remain, and the situation is highly fluid. Important updates and guidance will continue to be provided by the Harvard International Office as they are available. I am appreciative of Dr. Brittany Seymour, Ms. Carrie Sylven and Dr. Sang Park, for creating supportive office hour spaces today. Program leaders are actively meeting and discussing how to best support our international members at HSDM. We will continue to prioritize communicating information to you all and hosting forums to hear your concerns, and to come together in community.
Kindly continue to be especially supportive of our international students and trainees during this challenging time. Please also ensure you are taking care of yourself and finding time for restoration.
Sincerely yours,
William V. Giannobile
