Advanced Education in Implant Dentistry is a two-day, in-person continuing education program designed for clinicians seeking advanced training in immediate implant placement, restoration, and soft tissue management. Led by Harvard School of Dental Medicine faculty, the program combines evidence-based lectures with hands-on workshops to address both anterior and posterior implant challenges.
Participants will explore contemporary protocols for early and immediate implant placement, strategies for achieving primary stability, and advanced techniques for managing peri-implant soft tissue to support long-term clinical success. Immediacy Revisited
Early and Immediate Implant Treatment Advantages
This course examines contemporary protocols for dental implant placement, with a focus on timing strategies including immediate, early, and delayed placement. Participants will review the biological principles of hard and soft tissue healing following tooth extraction and how these factors influence clinical decision-making. Emphasis is placed on immediate implant placement, highlighting its advantages such as reduced surgical interventions, shortened treatment timelines, optimal use of existing bone for implant stabilization and positioning, and the potential for immediate fixed temporization. Clinical concepts are presented through case-based discussion to support practical application in everyday practice.

Immediate Implant Placement/Restoration in Anterior and Posterior Areas
This course focuses on immediate implant placement in premolar and molar sites, where anatomical, occlusal, and biomechanical factors present unique clinical challenges. Participants will examine differences between anterior and posterior implant placement, including larger extraction sockets, reduced bone quality in the posterior maxilla, and anatomical constraints related to the maxillary sinus and inferior alveolar canal. Emphasis is placed on treatment planning strategies to achieve primary stability in posterior regions.

Advances in Soft Tissue Management
Soft tissue management is a critical component of both periodontal therapy and implant dentistry. In implant treatment, the quantity and quality of peri-implant soft tissue play a key role in long-term stability and clinical success.
This presentation begins with the biological foundations of oral soft tissue healing and progresses to the principles underlying soft tissue surgical techniques. Clinical applications of soft tissue management in implant dentistry will be reviewed, with an emphasis on selecting appropriate approaches for different types of soft tissue defects. A range of surgical techniques will be introduced, along with preventive strategies to support optimal outcomes.
Throughout the lecture, the focus will be on clinical decision-making and evidence-based surgical principles, providing comprehensive guidelines for effective soft tissue management in implant therapy.

Soft Tissue Treatments in Periodontics and Implant Dentistry
Tissue biotype plays a critical role in the long-term stability of the supporting structures of the periodontium. Patients with a thin biotype present greater clinical challenges in prosthetic, orthodontic, and periodontal treatments, often resulting in less predictable outcomes. This lecture provides guidance on surgical approaches to modify tissue biotype, supporting improved stability and more predictable outcomes in multidisciplinary care.

- Identify patients with thin tissue biotypes who are at increased risk for complications
- Develop treatment plans to modify tissue biotype when indicated
